Ishikawa Uncho was a master woodcarver who was active in Niigata from the late Edo period to the early Meiji era. He left numerous vibrant and dynamic wooden carvings in temples throughout the prefecture. His talents extended beyond woodcarving to stone sculptures, paintings, and even temple design. Today, more than 1,000 of his works still remain in Niigata. This tour is guided by Niigata Tourism Charisma Guide Suiko Nakajima, who was so captivated by Uncho that she even published a book about him.
